To explore the perceptions of pregnant and recently delivered women about childbirth education. Qualitative design using the grounded theory approach. The city of Calgary, Canada. Thirty-two women, 25 to 44 years of age, who had delivered at least one child in the previous five years, were recruited through a non-random convenience sampling method. A qualitative research design was used for analysis of data, through face-to-face interviews. The data analysis identified four themes: (a) participants' perceived needs of childbirth education; (b) perceived effects of childbirth education; (c) participants' expectations of their education and (d) participants' reactions to the childbirth education information. Participants' perceived needs of childbirth education were to inform them of pregnancy related changes and to promote their healthy birth. They also considered it important that their education be individualized and informational. Participants' expectations of childbirth education were that they would receive information on the expected physical changes of pregnancy and labour, and expect their educational experience to be enjoyable. Participants' reactions to the information were either positive or negative. Participants considered it important that their childbirth education included information on pregnancy related changes and labour, that they be informed about what to expect physically and emotionally during their childbirth experience, that their education be individualized and that it be enjoyable.[Malignant vaso-occlusive crisis in polycythemia vera]. Four patients with polycythemia vera had severe attacks of tissue hypoxia and right heart failure due to the development of cerebral vaso-occlusion. Cardiac failure was reversible within a few hours by the administration of intravenous heparin or streptokinase. At admission, the electrocardiogram was normal except for sinus tachycardia in 2 patients. In all patients the oxyhemoglobin dissociation curve was shifted to the left and the mean concentration of oxygen in venous blood was 7.2 +/- 2.4 mm Hg. This sign of tissue hypoxia disappeared
